EXCLUSIVE Op-ed - Jennifer Hanin/ When the World did Not Blink

(Jennifer Hanin).
The world barely noticed when Turkish PM Tayyip Erdogan left the entire planet in the lurch by voting against Iran’s nuclear sanctions last week (ditto for Brazil and Lebanon).

The world stared silently when Russian government-ordered raids slaughtered thousands of Chechens and displaced over 500,000 in two decades.

The world entirely overlooked hundreds slain and thousands injured as armed ethnic clashes rage on in Kyrgyzstan.

The world slept soundly as government-supported militia ethnically cleansed more than 300,000 in Darfur and displaced more than 2.6 million in less than a decade.

The world completely ignored rival militia gangs that slaughtered millions in the Congo in just over a decade.

The world snored loudly during two decades of insurgency leaving 47,000 dead in Kashmir.

But when Israel defended itself against violent “peace activists” aboard the Mavi Marmara killing nine members of the IHH – an organization that has confirmed al Qaeda terrorist connections – the world demonized Israel yet again.

The flotilla aftermath begs the question, “What would any country do if a boat from ANOTHER COUNTRY loaded with armed men approached their shores after ignoring warnings from Navy coastguards? Would they stand silent and let the “peace” activists’ stab, beat and shoot their soldiers? I don’t think so.
Then why is the world applying a double standard to Israel? Simple. We’ve allowed our media to become so liberal that most will listen to anyone that has a story of woe to tell. We all know salacious stories sell. The saying, “If it bleeds, it leads” has circulated newsrooms for decades because people are visual and tragedies drive news. I can’t tell you how many four alarm fires or crash victims en route to a hospital that news crews across the country chase down on any a given day. Yes, it’s a morbid existence but it makes good television. Our need to see tragedies unfold before our eyes somehow makes our own problems seem minuscule and the need to feed this void is exactly how reality TV took root.

In the same vein, Muslim radicals, Hamas terrorists and “Palestinians” have photographed and videoed their injured, maimed or charred in an effort to win public support and make front-page headlines. Some media ploys have gotten so out of hand that Palestinians blamed deaths like that of 12-year-old Muhammed Al-Dura on Israel when evidence proved otherwise. On the other hand, Israel, America and a handful of other countries don’t display their casualties in an effort to preserve and protect human dignity. But this will change. The war on terror will likely shift priorities and we can expect to see more images on all sides to even the playing field.

But don’t expect those who love Israel to wait for more delegitimization. Many are pointing out how the media is singling out and blaming Israel every day. And guess what? Palestinian supporters are beginning to feel the burn. I’ve encountered three trolls in three days on Twitter that called me an “Israeli bastard,” a “Jew pig” and a “Terrorist.” For those keeping tabs, my parents were married to each other when they conceived me, I do not spend my days grunting and rolling in the mud, and the third is laughable and nothing more than moral inversion. I can’t deny that I let out a big chuckle when I saw these adolescent attempts to discredit me but instead of looking at this issue on a microscale, let’s step it up to a macroscale.

There is a huge PR effort occurring from Hamas and the Palestinians to victimize Gaza and to delegitimize Israel. Just in the last few days, National Public Radio (NPR) released several stories covering Gaza with Arab representatives making statements that demonize Israel. Here are two examples:

Arab League chief Amr Moussa’s said:

“The siege must be lifted. All the world is now standing with the people of Palestine and the people of Gaza.”

Hardly. Those of us that support Israel know that this statement is more than an exaggeration; it’s a LIE. Are Muslim countries like Iran, Syria, Lebanon, Libya and recently turned leftist Islamic Turkey, supporting Israel? Nope. But those of us from democratic countries are very supportive of Israel. In fact, I attended an Israel Solidarity rally in LA weeks ago organized by Stand With Us where an evangelical minister stated that Israel thinks of itself as a family of about 7 million, but the Jewish State can count 500 million Christians in that family too. This is huge.

Other examples? There are plenty. Just days ago the University of California Irvine banned the Muslim Student’s Union for a year as a result of a disciplinary investigation into the group’s heckling of Israeli Ambassador to the US, Michael Oren’s speech. This disciplinary action is unprecedented and sends a strong message to Muslim groups that wish to delegitimize Israel on US campuses. So making a claim that the whole world is standing with Gaza (vis-à-vis against Israel) is NOT accurate.

Then this NPR article shows a clear Palestinian bias. The author refers to Israel as an “occupying power.” This is a Nazi comparison and a moral inversion that’s pervasive today because Palestinian supporters keep repeating it. The truth is that Hamas controls Gaza. They took power in July 2007 and before that the Palestinian Authority ran Gaza. Most that know the situation well have no doubt that the real issue for Gaza lies with its crooked leaders like past Palestinian president Yasser Arafat who made off with billions in aid that Gazans never saw. It’s not too hard to see that if you remove the corruption, missiles and UN school books that teach hate, there probably would be progress in Gaza because we all know the key to progress is peace.

But the incidents of late have given us pause while some inklings of hope. While Turkey boldly embraces left-Islamic values and anti-Israel bias to a fault, Saudi Arabia says not so fast. Times Online reported that the Saudis gave Israel permission to use its airspace to attack Iran’s nuclear facilities. Prince Mohammed issued a report later refuting the story but most have reason to believe this was a quiet arrangement. Then you have President Ramzan Kadyrov of Islamic Chechnya whose recent visit to Israel shows that the two countries also have a common enemy: Muslim terrorists. So you can’t even say that even all Islamic countries share the same agenda. Clearly, when it comes to security and stability they don’t.

Democratic nations know the value of freedom. Even Hamas and Turkey are trying to exercise democratic freedoms as they file frivolous lawsuits against Israel over the Gaza flotilla incident (which they instigated). As usual, the world’s constant condemnation of the Jewish state is disturbing when it’s clear that the haters carefully orchestrated this aid fiasco on a slow news day – Memorial Day. A day when most Americans are enjoying time with their families NOT lining up at Israeli Consulates across the country to counter-protest for the networks. But that’s exactly what Palestinians supporters did. All networks covered their protests, while they chanted, “Death to Jews.”

We can’t get better television than that as we all know conflict sells. Hamas terrorists wouldn’t even accept the flotilla aid the world criticized Israel over so now the world should redirect its anger to the instigators: Turkey and Hamas. Hamas refusing flotilla aid, shows that either a) they don’t care about Gazans; b) this was a pre-planned media stunt where they martyred their own people to gain public opinion; or c) both. Next, came the backhanded support from Washington followed by Helen Gargoyle Thomas’s antisemitic comments.

Oddly enough, Iran has two aid ships heading toward Gaza. Interesting that the man considered to be one of the world’s biggest human rights abusers — Ahmadinejad— would have a soft spot for Gaza. Somehow, I’m not feeling the warm fuzzies. Nut job Ahmadinejad used the Gaza flotilla incident with Turkey as his curtain call to start a war with Israel. He has badmouthed Israel for years with his antisemitic tirades and this time he’s prepared to act on it. Nothing we Americans like better than a sequel. News crews get ready.

These events have made those standing for Israel even more determined to back the ONLY Jewish country (see the top 50 Islamic countries here) that deserves for the world to treat it with decency and the benefit of the doubt. Critics take note: Unlike Gaza, the West Bank is doing just fine.
